Creating Room to Breathe This Summer: The Power of a "No Plans" Day

Summer is supposed to feel carefree.

Longer days, family vacations, backyard cookouts, pool parties, camps, and spontaneous adventures all paint a picture of a season filled with joy and relaxation. Yet for many families, summer can end up feeling just as busy—if not busier—than the rest of the year.

Between coordinating schedules, shuttling kids to activities, managing vacations, keeping up with household responsibilities, and trying to squeeze in all the things we've been looking forward to, summer can quickly become overwhelming.

If you've found yourself feeling rushed, stressed, or wondering where the season is going, you're not alone.

As a professional organizer, I often tell clients that organizing is about much more than decluttering a closet or creating a functional pantry. At its core, organizing is about intentionally making room for what matters most.

That's why one of my favorite summer organizing tips has nothing to do with bins, labels, or storage solutions.

Choose one day each week with no plans at all.

It sounds simple, but the impact can be surprisingly powerful.

The Problem with Over-Scheduling

Many of us approach summer with the best intentions. We want our children to have memorable experiences. We want to take advantage of the beautiful weather. We want to visit family, attend community events, and finally tackle projects we've been putting off all year.

Before we know it, every weekend is booked and every weekday is packed with commitments.

Even enjoyable activities can become stressful when there's no margin between them.

When every day has an agenda, we lose the opportunity to slow down, recharge, and simply be present.

The result? We spend more time managing our schedules than enjoying our lives.

Why a "No Plans" Day Works

A dedicated no-plans day creates breathing room.

It provides space for rest without having to earn it.

It allows for spontaneous moments that often become the memories we treasure most—a family walk, an afternoon on the porch, a trip for ice cream, a backyard game, or simply sleeping in and enjoying a slower morning.

A no-plans day also helps reduce decision fatigue. When every hour doesn't need to be accounted for, your brain gets a chance to rest.

You don't have to coordinate logistics.

You don't have to rush out the door.

You don't have to constantly think about what's next.

Instead, you can enjoy where you are.

Organizing More Than Your Home

Many people think of organizing as something that only applies to physical spaces.

While organized spaces certainly reduce stress, our calendars and commitments deserve attention, too.

A cluttered schedule can create just as much overwhelm as a cluttered closet.

When our calendars become overloaded, even the things we love can start to feel like obligations.

Creating room in your schedule is every bit as important as creating room in your home.

Both help you feel calmer, more focused, and more in control of your day-to-day life.

Permission to Do Less

One of the greatest challenges for many families is giving themselves permission to do less.

We often worry that we're missing out if we don't attend every event, sign up for every activity, or fill every free moment with something productive.

But sometimes the most meaningful experiences happen when nothing is planned at all.

Children don't always remember the packed schedules.

They remember the lazy summer mornings.

The conversations around the kitchen table.

The impromptu trips for snowballs.

The evenings spent catching fireflies.

The simple moments that couldn't be scheduled if we tried.

Finding Your Own Room to Breathe

This week, take a look at your calendar.

Is there one day you can protect from commitments?

One day where the goal isn't productivity, but presence?

You may be surprised by how much lighter and more enjoyable summer feels when you intentionally leave space for life to unfold.

Because organizing isn't just about managing your stuff.

It's about creating room for what matters.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the pace of life—or if your home is adding to the stress instead of supporting your family—I'd love to help you find Room to Breathe.
